Writing 101 – Day 6 – The Space to Write

I write in complete solitude. That means no noisy cafes, no libraries, no outdoors, no music in the background, no people around me in the same room. Just me, my laptop and maybe a notebook and pen.

Writing means deep contemplation and thought. I’m not much of a multitasker anyway and I never got the hang of listening and thinking at the same time. While writing, the only listening I do is within myself.

But that’s just me. I am always in awe of people who can write anywhere they want and multitask at the same time. Especially in noisy work places or even while listening to music. It’s a real gift to be able to tune out sounds and focus on your thoughts and I deeply respect that.

Even now as I am blogging this in the afternoon at 3:46pm, all I can hear in the room is the reassuring low hum of the air-conditioner and the whirring fan. The traffic on the streets outside is blissfully quiet at the moment and my parents are taking their afternoon nap in their room. It’s just me sitting at the dining table with my laptop, typing away.

    How one longs for solitude that comes very occasionally! However, my experience is that solitude is a good catalyst but mostly in the take-off stage. Once the grey cells are set in motion, ideas start pouring in, words and sentences start flowing out, and one gradually becomes somewhat oblivious to one’s surroundings. The vast sky of thoughts beckons, a flight of fancy comes about, and lo and behold, one has the first draft ready by the time one lands back on terra firma and wakes up to find what is happening around!
    I am sure others have a different experience.

    I’m one of the lucky ones who can block out all distractions, but my partner is very persistent, and writing is often difficult when he’s around. He’s one who’s learned to slide through the wall. I also find it difficult if music is playing and it has words. I’m also a self-conscious writer in that I don’t want anyone to see it as I’m writing. So now, I also write in solitude!
    I have an immobile iMac, so that limits where I can write (I stopped handwriting years ago, a bit of a pity, I’m trying to get the habit again, at least by keeping notes of what I’m learning). But I hope to trade it in for a macbook in the future. An iMac won’t fit in the rucksack! I’m hoping that my need for solitude when writing will take place in the great outdoors.

      That’s pretty amazing that you can concentrate wherever you are irrespective of what or who is around you. I am a casual people/nature observer and I get so easily distracted by every single thing. There are those occasional days when I am so focused on something that I won’t realise anything but those are far and few between. And I can relate to being a self-c0nscious writer, I can’t have people hovering around me lest they see what I am up to!

      I stopped handwriting years ago too and the few notes that I do take are very haphazard and full of untidy scribbles. I am trying to be more organized about it but my mind just tells me to transfer everything directly onto a computer.

    Hallo, enjoyed reading, checking out your other w101 posts while here. Not doing it myself as would never keep up but gleaning from reading posts what the gen is for tasks and might get round to some some time. Sorry missed TaST again! I’m out of my writing habit other than scraps of paper and a notebook and a tiny bit of every evening blogging some really short free-writing (Snailzpace Daily). Weekends fly by and not getting as much done as I think I will but never mind. Looks like you’re enjoying W101 so far 🙂

      Thank you so much and no worries about TAST. You can take part whenever you are comfortable. Writing 101 is a lot of fun and I am enjoying it as much as Blogging 201. Hope you get back into writing mode soon! Will definitely catch up on reading your posts! 🙂
